2011 USTA/ITA NATIONAL INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center
Flushing Meadow, New York - November 3-6, 2011
The USTA/ITA National Indoors brought together some of the top players of college tennis to compete for the second national title of the year. The event was held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, so the players even got to enjoy some of the perks of being at the home of the U.S. Open. In the end, the faces in the winners' circle looked very familiar -- especially on the men's side.
Quite a few players in the men's draws were able to take home trophies from the Indoors to go next to the ones they had at the ITA All American Championships. Mitchell Frank made it two for two as he won both events. This time his opponent in the final was the only one to take a set off him at the All Americans, Dennis Nevolo of Illinois. Dennis once again pushed Mitchell to a three-setter, but the Virgina Cavalier prevailed in the end. Wil Spencer of Georgia, who was the finalist at the All Americans, picked up the Consolation trophy at the Indoors and the Ohio State duo of Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola won their second straight national crown.
Things were quite the same on the women's side, where there were new faces winning nationals. The final in the women's singles was a really surprise, with two unseeded players facing each other. Marta Lesniak of SMU ran through the draw, taking out three seeds in the process. Joanna Mather of Florida had a similar run, which including eliminating No. 2 Nicole Gibbs of Stanford. In the final, though, it was Joanna in straight sets. Duke's Beatrice Capra was the Consolation winner and the unseeded duo of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria from Southern California won the doubles.
The USTA Sportsmanship Awards at the National Indoors were given to Denise Dy of Washington and Eric Quigley of Kentucky, both of whom are seniors and three time All Americans.
