Candice Fuchs

At The Open With Marcia Frost...

Wednesday, August 22nd PM-Qualifying
Candice Fuchs, this year's Girls' 18 Supernationals finalist, was overpowered by No. 6 seed Francesca Schiavone in today's match. Despite her strong shots, Fuchs couldn't overcome the strength of the Italian who served a handful of aces during the match. Candice held on to win a few tough games, but eventually succumbed, 6-0,6-2.

ITA National Summer Championships winner Brian Vahaly was also scheduled to play today on the wildcard he received. His match against Laurence Tieleman (the No. 6 seed) was postponed due to rain.

The big news at the U.S. Open today was the announcement of the pairings for the main draw, scheduled to start on Monday, August 28th. NCAA Champion Alex Kim was unfortunate to draw No. 1 seed Andre Agassi as his first round opponent. We'll see next week if Stanford's Kim has what it takes to play the champ at Arthur Ashe stadium. The women's NCAA champion, Laura Granville, was forced to withdraw from the tournament because of an injury.
