The Mobilux Indoor Junior Open was held in Luxemborg. Virginia Razano of France defeated Michelle Gerards of the Netherlands for the Girls' Singles trophy, 6-4,6-2. Unseeded Gilles Muller of Luxemborg won the boys' event over Croatia's Roko Karanusic, 7-5,3-6,7-6(6). The winning doubles teams were Liga Dekmeijere/Marta Marrero and Markus Dickhardt/Bart Van Delft.

November 2000
Chris Kwon of the United States won the singles title at the Thailand Open. Kwon narrowly defeated Australia's Ryan Henry in the finals, 6-4,2-6,7-6(10). Su-Wei Hsieh of Japan took the girls event over Denmark's Line Elvstrom Ekner, 6-2,6-0. The doubles trophies went to Mark Henderson/Christopher Singh and Chin-Wei Chan/Hsin-Chieh Chang.

The third annual Little Mo Nationals were held October 27-30 at the Windward Lake Club in Alpharetta Georgia. The following players were the winners:

At the 15th Bahia Junior Cup in Brazil, Marcelo Meloand Livia Azzi were crowned champions in their own country.

The USTA has introduced the National Open Championships this year and there has been some confusion surrounding them. In July, the National Opens were played in addition to the USTA National Claycourt Championships. In November, however, the National Opens will replace the USTA National Indoor Championships, taking place over Thanksgiving weekend.

The major difference is that the Indoors consisted of only one location per event while the National Opens will have four locations for each age division. The hope is that more players will be able to compete since they have a wider choice of where to play.

The other confusion for players has been the introduction of the USTA Super National Winter Championships. The Super Nationals now replace the Fiesta Bowl, occuring at the same time and place (Arizona). The Super Nationals are open to: the top six singles finishers and the doubles finalists in each National Open; the top 40 entrants from the Super National Selection List; 60 sectional quota players; and up to four wild cards.

While we have not yet received the official copy of the 2001 USTA National Junior Schedule, the National Open format is believed to be continued next year, expanding to the 12s. For more information on these tournaments, contact USTA Junior Competition.

At the Yugoslavia Junior Open top-seeded Dusan Mihailovic won the boys singles title as well as the doubles with partner Vladimir Zdravkovic. On the girls side it was No. 1 seed Daniela Bercek who took the singles and the doubles with Borka Majstorvic.

The Cherry Creek High School boys tennis team ended one of the longest winning streaks in the nation's sports. The team had won an incredible 316 straight matches -- posting their last loss in 1972! The streak was ended by Wheat Ridge High School.

The Pelican Bowl was held in Bulgaria last month. Eko Kurniawan of Indonesia took the boys trophy with a 6-3,6-7(4),6-4 win over Teodor Bolanv of Romania. Bulgaria's Nadejda Vassileva became the girls singles winner after defeating Elena Gantcheva, 6-1,1-0 retired.

September 2000
USTA Missouri Valley captured the championship at the Fifth Annual 2000 World Team Tennis (WTT) Junior Nationals. The tournament, which was hosted by Billy Jean King, was held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. The USTA Missouri Valley team included Mike Rubinelli, Sam Davidson, Mac Burke, Stpehanie Price, Sheryl Poush, Corey Stephen and Coach Ken Goodall. They won the final match against Intermountain, 43-31.

Ashley Harkleroad and Eric Nunez recently declared themselves professionals. Andy Roddick and Bethanie Mattek also turned pro this year.

The Sportsmanship Award at the Maureen Connelly Brinker Championships was presented to Stephanie Wooten.

Aisha Christian (G18), Luis Haddock (B18), Sacha Gums (G16) and Gustavo Sanchez (B16) won their divisions at the 2000 Caribbean Junior Sectional. Karmelina Rivera and Miguel Perez Abreu received Sportsmanship Awards.

Kristen Schlukebir, USTA Girls' 18 Super Nationals winner, received the Maureen Connolly Brinker Outstanding Junior Girl Award. This was the 30th year the award was presented.

Robby Ginepri became the first Georgia player to make a Grand Slam junior singles final when he earned his spot against Andy Roddick at the U.S. Open Junior Championships. It was also the first all-American final in 15 years. (Full Coverage of All College and Junior Players at the Open.)

Pete Sampras and Corina Moraiu made contributions to the Tim & Tom Gullickson Foundation Scholarship Program, allowing six kids whose lives have been affected by brain tumors to be awarded $5,000 in college scholarships. The organization, started after Tim Gullickson (Sampras' coach) was diagnosed with brain tumors, gave the awards to: Kristie Bullock (Munster, IN); James Huber (Durham, NC); Jacob Kratz (Elkhorn, WI); Zachary Mann (Newpoort, NC); Adam Staron (Farmington, CT); and Jeff Welch (Greenville, SC).

Ashley Lipton led the Menlo School (Atherton, California) girls' team to their second straight CIF-NORCAL title. Lipton, a freshman last season, was undefeated at No. 1 single -- never even losing a set. The Menlo School boys' team also did well, finishing second at the Spring Nationals.

The United States has selected its team for the Maureen Connelly Challenge Trophy. Laura Granville, Ansley Cargill, Sarah Taylor, Alyssa Cohen and Megan Bradley will represent the U.S. in Bermuda at the September event.

July 2000
Ivan Cerovic of Croatia and Virag Nemeth of Hungary took the singles titles at the Eravis Epitok Cup in Hungary, Budapest.

The 8th International Junior Tournament of Frankfurt. Germany's Maximilan Abel was the boys winner with a 6-4,6-4 win over Luciano Vitullo. Doubles went to Daniel Kolleren and Sebastien Linda. On the girls side, unseeded Sofia Aruidsson won the singles and Neyssa Etienne/Nicole Kriz were doubles winners.

The following players prevailed in the finals of the 98th Southern California Junior Sectionals: Steven Forman (Boys 12), Eric Riley (Boys' 14), Alexander Anselme (Boys' 16), Ryan Heinberg (Boys' 18), Diane Matias (Girls' 18), Judith DeVera (Girls' 16), Tracy Lin (Girls' 14) and Cosmina Ciobanu. (Girls' 12) Cosmina's win came over 10 year old Alexa Glatch who made it to the finals without losing a set.

Jakub Kmita of Poland was the singles and doubles champion at the Prokum Cup. His doubles partner was Alfred Zachwiej, also of Poland. The girls singles champ was Claudia Kuleszka of Germany. Tetyana Bula and Yuljana Fedek of Ukraine won the doubles.

The LTA International Junior Championships just finished in Roehampton, England. In the singles finals of this Wimbledon warm-up, Mario Ancic defeated Simon Stadler, 7-6,6-1. In the girls draw, Aniko Kapros defeated Tatiana Perebiynis, 6-3,1-6,6-4. Tatiana came back to win the doubles title with partner Iona Gaspar while Karol Beck and Michal Kokta took the boys.

June 2000
Drew University coach Ira Miller has been chosen to coach the U.S. Open Men's and Women's teams at the 16th World Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 7-27, 2000. The Maccabiah Games are recognized by the International Olympic Committee as an event for over 5,600 world class Jewish Athletes in almost 30 sports. The U.S. tennis team will be comprised of six men and six women between the ages of 18-35. A tryout will be held January 8-12, 2001 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. At this year's Italian Junior Open, the girls singles and doubles trophies went to Ioana Gaspar of Romania.. Ioana beat top-seeded Maria Emilia Salerni of Argentina in the singles, 6-7,6-3,8-6 before partnering with Tatiana Perebiynia and beating the doubles team of Martina Babakova and Samantha Sosur, 6-3,7-5. Todor Enev of Bulgaria took the boys singles title after a 6-3,6-3 win over Andriy Dernovskyy of the Ukraine. The USA's Andy Roddick teamed with Juliene Cassaigne of France and took the doubles with a 4-6,6-3,6-2 win over Bruno Soares and Stefan Wiespeiner.

Sweden's Jenny Lindstrom and Poland's Lukasz Kubot were the singles winners at the Raiffeisen Spring Bowl in Austria. The doubles went to the Slovakian team of Dominika Nociarova/Zuzanba Zemenova and Dumiso Khumalo/Raven Klaasen.

The USTA has chosen the following players to compete at the NEC World Youth Cup Championships: Amber Liu, Jackie Carleton, Kelley Hyndman, Rajeev Ram, Jonathan Stokke and Rylan Rizza.

The final at the Intermountain Sweetheart Circuit Tournament saw Catrina Thompson squeak past her twin sister Christian for the win, 6-4,6-4/ Chad Harris won the boys' event after defeating Cory Russ, 6-3,7-6.

Stephen Bohli of Switzerland took the title at the 18th International Junior Tournament of Salsomaggione in Italy with a 3-6,6-4,6-4 win over Switzerland's Roman Valent. Kala Kanepi of Estonia took the girls event from Virag Nemeth of Hungary, 6-3,6-3.

The following players were trophie winners at the Otter Creek Spring Junior Championships: Boys' 12-Rylan Brazile; Boys' 14-Jordan Custer; Boys' 16-John Shults; Boys' 18-Patrick Murphy; Girls' 12-Sarah Buss; Girls' 14-Holly McGetrick; and Girls' 16-Melissa Cornett.

The Asian Open Junior Championships were held in Japan April 19-25. The final round consisted of these matches:

The singles titles at the 25th City of Florence International Tournament went to Sebastian Linda from Germany and Kala Kanepi of Estonia.

Mark McGuigan of Pensacola, Florida won an amazing three events at the 2000 Spring Country Club Championships in April. Mark breezed through the Boys' 16 singles final with a 6-0,6-0 win over Brock Sakey. He then won the 18s after defeating Brian Soderlind, 6-2,7-5, before teaming with Michael Nelson for the 16s doubles title.

The top two seeds faced off in the Japan Open Junior Championships boys singles final with No. 2 Todor Enev winning over Joachim Johansson, 6-4,6-3. Jane O'Donoughue prevailed over Tracey O'Connor for the girls title.

In the Phillipines, the USA's Matthew Emery advanced to the finals of the 11th Mitsubishi Lancer International Champiionships before losing to Simon Stedler of Germany, 6-2,6-0. Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia was the girls winner over Nicole Kriz, 6-4,6-4.

April 2000
The final round of the Banana Bowl saw tops seeds prevail. In the boys singles, American Andy Roddick defeated Sweden's Joachim Johansson, 6-2,3-6,7-6(3). The doubles win went to the Great Britain team of Lee Childs and James Nelson with their win over Bulgaria's Todor Enev and Japan's Hirold Kondo, 6-2,5-7,7-6(6). On the girls side, Argentina's Maria Emilia Salerni took the singles with a 6-0,6-7(2),6-1 win over Slovakia's Lenka Dlhopalcova and teamed up with Eugenia Chialvo for the doubels title over France's Emmanuelle Edon and Olivia Lyllane Sanchez, 6-1,6-0.

During the Southern Regional Championships in Little Silver, New Jersey, the following final matches produced winners:

The singles winners of the Singapore International Junior Championships were Tapei's Yen-Hsun Lu and Hungary's Dorottva Magasi. Yen-Hsun Lu also partnered with Ahmed Iqbal Wahla for the doubles win, while the girls doubles went to Dea Sumantr/Angelique Widjaga of Hungary.

The Springside Boys Junior Championships gave trophies to the following players: Borko Tesic-18s; Patrick Thompson-16s, Ryan Trapp-14s and Bryant Salcedo-12s.

Ohio Dominion College announced that it is adding programs in men's and women's tennis, as well as soccer.

After some tough matches, Alexa Konstand (18), Jacqueline Lee (16), Kristen McPhillips (14) and Megan Stoll (12) prevailed as winner at the Parkview Girls' Winter Championships.

Unseeded Alexa Glatch from Irvine, California took third place on the Girls' 12 division at the Copper Bowl. This win was especially notable since Alexa is only 10 years old.

The following players won titles at the Omaha Holiday Junior Open: Tyler Steinie-Boys' 18; Abby Souders-Girls' 18; Eric Hines-Boys' 16; Stephanie Klarlik-Girls' 16; Adam Sutton-Boys' 14; Cameron Hubbs-Girls' 14; Drew Mercier-Boys' 12 and Cameron Hubbs-Girls' 14s and 12s.

Lester Cook became the first fifteen year old to reach the finals of the Boys' 18 Copper Bowl before losing to Brian Wilson, 6-4,6-2.

During the Gustavus Winter Classic, top seed Tyler Steinle prevailed in the Boys' 18 finals with a 6-0,6-0 win over Zackary Smith. In the Boys' 14s, Eric Sorenson defeated Mark Hallberg, 6-0,6-3.

The 85th Annual Midwinter Junior Tournament was held in Santa Barbara, California. Erica Shweyer (Girls' 12); Kristen McVitty (Girls' 14); Judith DeVera (Girls' 16) and Kelly Schmandt (Girls' 18) were the winners.

Philip Sheng won back to back titles when he followed his Fiesta Bowl win with a championship at the Midwinter Junior Tournament.

The Rochester Athletic Club held its Junior Championships in December. The following players took home the trophies: Kerry Meath (G18), Caitlin Loprinzi (G16), Nataly Livshits (G14), Christina Keesey (G12), Kyle Anderson (B18), Zachary Smith (B16), Chi Pham (B14) and Tom Litscher (B12).

Janko Tipsarevic and Ivana Abramovic took the singles crowns at the Yucatan World Cup while Danko Madjarovski/Tipsarevic and Martina Babakova/Evgenia Subbotina were the doubles winners.
