2002 USTA NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Roosevelt Island Racquet Club - New York City
November 27-December 2, 2002

Sunday, December 1st
Some of the longest matches of the tournament took place on the final day. It was a fight until the end through the Consolation draw. After some long quarterfinal matches early in the morning, the semis continued in the same form. Jill Wexler took three sets to get past Ruxandra Dumetrescu at the same time Bhavani Tirumurti struggled in three against Lindsay Gray. Fortunately, the final for Jill and Bhavani went quicker as the latter took fifth place in a 10-8 tiebreaker.

While the doubles final was confined to an eight game pro-set, it was still an exciting match. Unseeded sisters Carlissa and Laken King received a challenge from the top seeds, Nadejda Demidenko and Eva Lipiec. The twins took home the top prize with a 8-6 victory.

This year's National Open at Roosevelt Island proved to be a fun experience for all who attended. It was full of some great tennis and friendships that have formed among the competition.
