Chris Martin

A new group has been formed to develop and promote the growth of college tennis in the U.S. The USTA Collegiate Committee had its first meeting this month and is chaired by Jerry Noyce, former men's coach at Minnesota. Also on the committee are: Kent Blumenthal, NIRSA; Benjamin Bucca, USTA-Eastern; Kent DeMars, South Carolina; Manuel Diaz, Georgia; John Embree, Wilson; Cynthia Erb, USTA-Northern California; David Fish, Harvard; Louise Gengler, Princeton; Rodney Harmon, USTA; Dr. Fred Ho, USTA-Southern California; Candace Royer, MIT; Stella Sampras, UCLA; Joe Vegosen, USTA-Midwest; and Ron Woods, USTA/Staff Liason.

The College of Santa Fe begins play in the NAIA this season. In anticipation of this, the school has built a $5.6 million facility, the Rosemarie Shellaberger Tennis Center. Doug MacCurdy, who has worked as the Director of USA Tennis Player Development as well as General Manager of the ITF, has been named Head Tennis Coach for both the men's and women's team.

Coaching Changes... Kord Schwarz is the new Assistant Women's Coach at William & Mary while Ben Schreiber is the new Assistant Men's Coach there... Former Tennessee All-American Alison Ojeda has been named Assistant Women's Coach at Texas A&M... Agustin Moreno has made the switch from Assistant Men's Coach at TCU to the same position at Georgia...

Gustav Pousette, a recent graduate of the Kentucky team, has been named the recipient of a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA. Gustav graduated with a degree in foreign language and international economics and had a perfect 4.0 average.

The 2002 ITA Summer Circuit Player of the Year awards have been given to Illinois sophomore Chris Martin and Ohio State's Sadhaf Pervez. Chris won one title and reached the finals of two others during the Summer Circuit. Sadhaf was the winner at the ITA National Summer Championships and also reached three semifinals during the Summer.
