2005 NCAA DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIPS

The big story at the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Championships was certainly the UCLA team victory. The Bruins managed to snap Baylor's 57-match winning streak -- and their own 21 year NCAA losing streak -- to take the trophy back to Los Angeles. (Read more about the NCAA Team Championships here.) It wasn't unexpected, however, when top-seeded Benedickt Dorsh of Baylor and the Georgia team John Isner/Antonio Ruiz took home the titles at the singles and doubles championships.

It was an expected result at the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Championship when Stanford picked up its 14th Team Championship, but there was nothing usual about the individual championships. Cardinal Amber Liu was forced to give up her bid for a record third singles title because of a shoulder injury. She surprised everyone by instead making it to the doubles final with teammate Anne Yelsey against fellow teammates Erin Burdette and Alice Barnes. It was the latter who were victorious, but that final wasn't even the real shocker of the tournament. After an easy first few rounds, Baylor's unseeded Zuzana Zemenova surprised No. 5 Jennifer Magley in the semis and then upset No. 3 Audra Cohen in the finals to take the win.

Next year promises to be the most exciting NCAA Division I Championships yet as both the Men and Women will meet at Stanford for one giant tournament that will revile the a Grand Slam event.
